James S. May Jr., Chief of Police, started his law enforcement career with the City of Northglenn in September of 1992. As an officer, he served on the SWAT team, participated as a Public Information Officer, a Community Relations officer, Bicycle Officer and a Use of Force and Driving Instructor. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2001, Lieutenant Commander in 2005, Commander in 2008 and is currently serving as Chief of Police.
Chief May has been awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a bank robbery attempt, the Life-Saving Medal and two Community Policing Awards. He received the Columbine Ribbon for his involvement with the SWAT team during the Columbine High School shooting in 1999.
Chief May received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Metropolitan State College of Denver. He recently graduated from Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and is an instructor at Arapahoe Community College Police Academy.
The chief of police reports to the city manager and is responsible for the leadership and management of the department. The chief sets department policy, goals and objectives, and monitors organizational and individual performance. The Chief is also responsible for development and management of the department's budget of more than $7,000,000.
