Every 4th of July celebration, the City's precision rafting teams get ready for a rematch at the annual Mayor's Cup Raft Race. It's a race against time and other City officials! You can expect to see elected officials from Federal Heights, Thornton, Broomfield, Commerce City, and Northglenn as they compete to claim VICTORY in the name of their City. The racecourse starts at the boat dock located on the southwest corner of Webster Lake at E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park. Rafters will paddle their rafts across the lake, around the big Firecracker in the lake, and then back to the boat dock.

Because of its geographic location, Colorado can have both hot summers and cold winters. These variances in weather conditions mean residents will need to heat or cool their homes depending on the season. Both heating and cooling add pressure on our environment and are a reflection of the often-unconscious actions of many individuals. There are also many individual actions that can help keep Colorado a wonderful place to live.
Residents can cut energy consumption by turning down the thermostat a couple degrees, turning off lights and computers, and following the simple tips listed below.
Why?
You will not only lower your energy bill but subsequently the energy production from coal, oil, and natural gas. The greenhouse gases produced in association with energy from these fuels are one of the leading causes of global climate change. These climate shifts reduce our snow pack and water supplies, can cause damaging storms, and have other consequences for our environment.
Please take a few moments and to read about the easy things you can do to sustain this place you depend upon and affect.
What you can do to conserve energy and protect the environment.
- Turn down the heat. Wear sweaters during the colder months and in the summer turn up the thermostat and wear cooler clothes. Conduct a home energy audit to find out how to improve your home's insulation and energy efficiency. Click here for more information on a home energy audit.
- Insulate your water heater and pipes. Turn the temperature on your water heater down to 12 degrees or install and on-demand water heater. Take shorter showers and install low-flow showerheads and faucets. Wash clothes in cold water and use hot water for heavily stained or soiled loads only.
- Turn off the lights when you leave the room. The advice you received from your parents years ago is still good advice. Install energy-efficient, compact fluorescent lights as these lights last longer and use less electricity. Turn off your computer when not in use for several hours or more. Use your microwave when possible, for one-third of the energy outlay of your conventional oven. Look for the Energy Star label when you choose to replace your major appliances.
At its most basic level, sustainability means, "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." As we depend on a healthy environment for our clean, abundant water, air and food, flood control, climate, and natural resources, we need to learn how we affect the environment and be good stewards of it.
