Do I Need a Permit?

Use this guide to determine if you need to obtain a permit for building-related work.

This is not a complete list of all types of projects. Please contact us with any questions or if you do not see your project listed here.

City Hall is closed to the public until further notice. Permits may be pulled online. All other services are operating as normal.


Projects That Require A Permit

Outside
  • Decks, including with attached roofs
  • Patio covers, awnings and carports
  • Outside water/sewer line replacement or repair
  • Fences
  • Retaining walls 4 feet over ground level
  • Lawn sprinklers
  • Pools, hot tubs (elec)
  • Re-roofing
  • Siding and stucco
  • Room additions
  • Garages – detached and attached
  • Sheds - over 200 SF
  • Evaporator/swamp coolers
  • Air conditioning units
  • Patio enclosures
  • Screened porches
  • Solar panels
  • Gas lines
  • Gazebo
  • Public sidewalk or curb and gutter replacement (contact Public Works)

Inside
  • Furnace installation or replacement
  • Water heater installation or replacement
  • Boiler installation or replacement
  • Gas logs and gas lines
  • Fireplaces (wood, pellet, or gas)
  • Basement finishes
  • Remodeling
  • Electrical modifications
  • Plumbing modifications
  • Structural modifications
  • Electric to gas conversions
  • Installation or replacement of windows or doors (required  U-factor .32 U-factor or less)
  • Increase or decrease of window or door size
  • Sump pumps

Permits Not Required
Outside
  • General landscaping
  • Concrete private sidewalks/driveways
  • Soffit, facia and gutter replacement
  • Concrete or stone patio slabs (without roofs)
  • Painting
  • Minor fence picket repair
  • Shed - One story detached under 200 SF

Inside
  • Kitchen cabinets and counter tops (same appliance location)
  • Flooring
  • Painting
  • Replacing plumbing fixtures (same location)
  • Changing light fixtures
